MIXTAPE: EVERY FRIDAY AT SNAFU |
|
|
JANUARY RESIDENT SHOWCASES
This
year it's all about the residents! We are pretty darn proud to have
such a talented lot of DJ/producers at the helm with serious global
experience that means, when we want to, attracting the biggest names in
electronica. The week to week Friday night music policy is going to see
the techno sounds of Detroit and minimal clash head on with the latest
sounds
from Baltimore and the electro-madness of Parisian boudoirs. Read on
for info on
the January Mixtape residents...
MIXTAPE FRIDAY 11th JAN A LA FU (BIG DADA/RADIO SKOOL) Aberdeen's
high court of turntablism is represented tonight as the man behind some
of the biggest hip-hop and funk shows the town has ever seen brings you
his modern interpretation of 'salmon' dance music. Now don't get us
wrong he doesn't technically play house music these days but there's a
background of 4/4 (well maybe 8/4) with tracks from the Euro crunk
mashers as well as the hip-hop-routed B-More world of Diplo, Spank Rock
and M.I.A plus the techier angle of Modeselektor and Paul Woolford -
and not forgetting FU's own edits, remixes and tweaks for the
occasion!! Get down with the kids Y'ALL!!
More on A LA FU. He's toured, supported and shared the stage with the likes of Gil Scott Heron, De La Soul, Afrika Bambatta and Blackalicious; appeared on TV with DJ Kool Herc, illustrating the art of DJing for MTV alongside Roots Manuva and competed against the Scratch Perverts at the first ever DMC Team Finals. His production work is stellar, working closely with Big Dada and Ninja Tune record labels and remixing work for Coldcut and Saul Williams. A LA FU’s most recent project has seen him creating a lovingly-crafted, utterly blazing two hour mix of the Big Dada label’s output in celebration of their 10th year in the business. A LA FU BIG DADA MIXTAPE FRIDAY 18th JAN DISFUNKTION DJs (KEV C AND TRIGO/HOUSEWORK) Disfunktion
DJs – Kev and Trigo, have held residencies all over Aberdeen, at
some of the city's busiest, and most forward thinking venues including
the former Long Island Iced Tea shop, Palace and Vaults, as well Kef,
Moshulu, The Pelican, Subway and Snafu. Further away from home
they’ve played gigs at the Ice Factory (Perth – with
Stonebridge), Liquid Rooms (Edinburgh), Sub Club (Glasgow), Tangerine
(Dubai) and Straight Up! in Birmingham with Mixmag Future Hero Andy
Price. Of late the duo have been playing their elusive blend of twisted
electro and house using a 5 deck, fx and ableton set-up at Snafu under
the guises of Housework and Mixtape. Such nights have allowed the boys
to warm up for the likes of Ralph Lawson and the 20:20 Soundsystem,
Harri and Dominic, Lottie, Jon Carter, Green Velvet, Jacques Lu Cont,
Mr C, Kevin Saunderson, Nathan Fake, Leeroy Thornhill, Terry Francis,
Cagedbaby and Slam.
MIXTAPE FRIDAY 25th JAN RADIOSKOOL (A LA FU AND KIDPROQUO) “…this
is RADIOSKOOL and in the tradition of the school, we want to give you
some edutainment.” – Roots Manuva
Radioskool started off as a live radio transmission, it was then bootlegged as a mix album (featuring Maseo, Juice Aleem, Mike Ladd and Infinite Livez), that worked it’s way to worldwide critical acclaim and onto the New York Turntable lab as a top five seller alongside DJ Shadow and Coldcut. Radioskool now finds A LA FU and KIDPROQUO taking the show live on stage with previous special guest performances from Roots Manuva, The Sugarhill Gang and Prince Paul, to name but a few. Join A LA FU and KIDPROQUO for their monthly night of electronical experiments with twisted electro, house and minimal; chopped and kranked with the sounds of fidget house, b-more and technoid disco - it's the new sound dont-cha-know. doors :: 10pm - 3am / £5/£4/FREE TO MEMBERS (resident nights) ![]() MIXTAPE FRIDAY 1st FEB STACEY PULLEN (DETROIT/HI-TEK SOUL) DISFUNKTION DJs (MIXTAPE RESIDENTS) Stacey
Pullen is the Kosmik Messenger. An innovator from the Second Wave of
Detroit techno, he grew up under the mentorship of Detroit's legendary
three: Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson. Still continuing
to produce his characteristic atmosphere laden electronic sound, Stacey
Pullen compounds his reputation as a producer with that of being one of
the world's most in demand DJs, playing weekly across the globe year
in, year out. With a passion for music and performance that
never dries up, Stacey Pullen still plays every gig from the heart
seeking to surprise and engage, to provide an unforgettable experience,
to offer up his unique catalogue without predictability - defying
expectation. Above all, from his earliest attempts to the current day
Stacey Pullen has stayed true to his one goal: to become and to always
be an Innovator.
If his recent sell out gig at Glasgow’s Sub Club is anything to go by, his date at Snafu is going to be a monumental night in Snafu’s bolstering line-up. STACEY PULLEN doors :: 10pm - 3am tickets :: £10 advance |

SNAFU MAGAZINE RELEASE 16 - ABERDEEN ADAPTING |
|
|
It's
that time of the month where we are busy trying to pull another Snafu
magazine out of our hats. This will be the 16th issue of the magazine,
which means there's a lot to live up to! We hope you enjoyed the last
edition - and if you've got any feedback positive or negative, or would
like to contribute then email jaco@snafumagazine.com by 8th February.
Anyways, this issue of the magazine is going to look at how Aberdeen is planning to adapt in order to survive the looming diminishment of the oil reserves of the North East. We start to look at the developments being put into place to safeguard the city and shire's long-term economic future. Was the Trump denial a win for democracy and conservation or a mighty c**k up for future North East investment? There's also going to be a shake-up of club entry hours in 2009 that seems to contradict the cosmopolitan thinking of cities down south and the fine rhetoric of Gordon Brown. This is also our bumper music issue, looking at upcoming Scottish music labels, as well as local and international music makers; and of course all the regular features on culture, lifestyle and music in the North East and beyond, plus illustration contributions from Gordon Tait (Beano), Ryan Riss (LA) + Turbokrapfen (Italy).
